Supporting Your Apprentice Through End-Point Assessment (EPA)
Apprenticeship assessment is changing. Some apprentices will still complete an independent end-point assessment (EPA), while apprentices on standards that have moved to a revised assessment plan may be assessed during their programme. NCE will confirm which approach applies. Where EPA remains in place, employer support throughout the apprenticeship can make a clear difference to confidence and outcomes.
What EPA is
For standards that still use EPA, it is an independent assessment of whether the apprentice can apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours in the occupational standard. It is delivered by an approved assessment organisation. Methods vary by standard and typically combine two methods, or one method with an integrated qualification; these may include a professional discussion, observation, project, interview or test.
Check which assessment model applies
Revised apprenticeship assessment plans are being introduced in phases during 2026 and 2027. These can allow assessment during the apprenticeship, employer verification of behaviours and provider involvement in some assessment activity, while an assessment organisation retains overall quality assurance. NCE will explain the current plan for each apprentice rather than assuming every programme follows the older EPA model.
What gateway means
For a programme that still uses gateway, the employer decides when the apprentice is occupationally competent and ready for EPA, normally after discussion with the apprentice and NCE. The apprentice must have completed the minimum duration and all gateway requirements in the relevant assessment plan, including any mandatory training, qualifications, English and maths requirements and specified evidence. Readiness should be reviewed throughout the programme, not left until the final weeks.
How employers can help
Protect off-the-job training time in the final months so preparation is not squeezed.
Give opportunities to demonstrate the full range of the standard in their role.
Hold regular conversations with the apprentice and their Professional Learning Mentor (PLM) about progress and readiness.
Help the apprentice reflect on real examples from school life they can use in a professional discussion.
Use mock activities that reflect the assessment methods and discuss reasonable adjustments early where they may be needed.
Recognise that EPA can feel daunting and encourage them to ask for support early.
Working with your Professional Learning Mentor
Your apprentice's PLM will plan EPA preparation with them, including mock assessments and feedback. Progress reviews are the best place for you to share what you see day to day and agree any extra opportunities the apprentice needs before gateway.
After EPA
Once the result is confirmed, take time to celebrate the achievement and talk about next steps, whether that is a new responsibility, a progression route or a further qualification. It is also a good moment to think about who in your team could start the next cohort.
