The apprenticeship

What is the Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship?

Every school now needs staff who can step confidently into a specialist role, backed by real expertise rather than good intentions alone. That's what the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship builds.

This is the recognised progression from Level 3, developing lead specialist support with a focus on SEND, Social & Emotional Well-being or Curriculum Provision. Learners build deeper pedagogy, assessment and planning skills to design interventions with measurable impact, coach colleagues, and take on HLTA style responsibility.

It matters more than ever with the SEND reforms landing. Schools must publish an inclusion plan by December 2026, and Ofsted will look for evidence it's being delivered, not just written. This apprenticeship builds the middle layer of specialist capacity many schools are missing right now, funded through the levy rather than added to a stretched budget.

Levy transfers depend on partner availability and can't be guaranteed on every enrolment. As your training provider we'll pursue every funding route available, co-investment, transfer partnerships and incentive payments, so your workforce journey is as cost-effective as possible.

Cost & funding

How much does the Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship cost?

£12,000 fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy for levy-paying employers, £0 to the learner.

Non-levy schools access the apprenticeship through 95% government co-investment (5% employer contribution = £450) or through a levy transfer from a supporting levy-paying employer.

Employers must protect the minimum off-the-job training hours within contracted paid time, this is a funding rules requirement, not a preference.
