Safeguarding runs through every part of an NCE apprenticeship because it runs through every part of the education sector. This guide explains what safeguarding is, how it applies to you, and the support that is in place around you.
What safeguarding means
Safeguarding is the work we do to protect children, young people and adults at risk from abuse, neglect and harm, and to promote their welfare. It is a legal duty for schools, colleges, trusts and local authorities, and it applies to every adult who works or trains in those settings, including you as an apprentice.
How safeguarding shows up in your apprenticeship
You will complete safeguarding, Prevent and online safety training before your programme starts
You will follow the safeguarding policy of the setting where you work
You will be introduced to the Designated Safeguarding Lead in your workplace and to NCE's safeguarding team
You will be expected to raise any concerns straight away using your setting's reporting route
The Prevent duty
As part of your induction, you will learn about the Prevent duty, which asks people who work with children, young people and adults at risk to help stop them being drawn into extremism. Prevent is about early conversations and appropriate referrals, not surveillance, and your mentor will talk you through what it looks like in your role.
If you have a concern about a learner or colleague
Follow your setting's safeguarding policy. Speak to the Designated Safeguarding Lead the same day. Write down what you saw, heard or were told using the words that were used, and pass it on. Do not investigate on your own and do not promise confidentiality.
If you have a concern about yourself
If you feel unsafe, unwell or unsupported at any point during your apprenticeship, contact your NCE professional learning mentor or email our safeguarding team. In an emergency, or if you are worried a child is in immediate danger, call 999. The NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000 is available around the clock for advice about a child's safety.
