DBS checks for apprentices in education

If you are training to work with children, young people or adults at risk, an enhanced DBS check is almost always part of the recruitment process. This guide explains what to expect and how to prepare.

What DBS stands for

DBS is the Disclosure and Barring Service. It is a UK government body that carries out criminal record checks and helps employers make safer recruitment decisions in roles that involve contact with children or adults at risk.

The three levels of check

The barred lists

For roles that involve regulated activity with children or adults, an enhanced check will also include a search of the children's barred list, the adults' barred list, or both. Anyone on the relevant list is prohibited by law from working in that role.

How to prepare

Your employer, or NCE where we manage recruitment, will send you a link to complete an online DBS application. Have your address history for the past five years, your passport or driving licence, and one other document such as a recent utility bill or bank statement ready. Answer every question honestly. Withholding information that later comes up on your certificate is a bigger problem than the original entry.

If something is on your record

A previous conviction or caution does not automatically stop you working in education. Most decisions are made case by case, based on how long ago the incident was, the nature of the offence and the role you are applying for. If you are worried, tell your employer or NCE early. We would rather have an honest conversation up front than a difficult one later.

The DBS Update Service

Once you have your certificate, we recommend joining the DBS Update Service for a small annual fee. It allows employers to check your status online without you having to reapply every time you move roles or add a new setting to your work.
